*What should I expect on the first visit?
First visit or consultation usually takes about one hour if not longer. Dr. Chang will begin by reviewing your complete medical and dental history, followed by a oral examination. The history and examination are needed before your conditions can be accurately diagnosed and/or treated. By collecting this information, Dr. Chang can begin to talk about your problems and present treatment option(s) or alternative(s) to you. Emergency conditions, if any, will be treated first during the visit.

*What are the risks if my gum(periodontal) diseases did not receive timely treatment?
Periodontal(gum) diseases cause damage or destruction of supporting tissue, e.g., bone, of the tooth. Apparently, without proper treatment it can result in tooth loss which may in turn destabilize the bite and affect the health of other teeth and overall function and/or esthetics.
More importantly, an increasing body of evidence shows that periodontal diseases, especially some severe types, are linked to a number of systemic illnesses, such as diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, respiratory diseases and more. Therefore, restoration of the periodontal health may have a profound benefit to your systemic health in addition to your oral health. More detailed information can be found at the website of American Academy of Periodontology.
